abstract = "There is a lot of debate among environmentalists and those who
dedicate to eucalyptus farming/plantation about the harms of such
activity to the environment, specially when cultivated in wide
scale. Todays satellite imagery and remote sensing techniques
together with Geographic Information System (GIS) are the best
tools when it comes to mapping and monitoring growth and impacts
associated to this activity. Thus, the main goal of this study
consists in mapping the crops of Eucalyptus in the municipality of
Itamarandiba (Minas Gerais) and analysing soil and water impacts
associated to the forestry activity, using GIS techniques,
extracting results from the ZEEs (Ecological and Economic Zonation
of Minas Gerais) database. Images of the TM sensor (Thematic
Mapper) on the LandSat 5 satellite were used in the 218 points 72,
218 point 73 and 217 point 73 orbits. These images were already
georeferenced and were mosaicked and processed. Moreover, the ZEEs
physical-biotic layers were also used in the study. After
analysing the data it has been observed that around 6 thousand
hectare (10%) are located in restricted or unfit areas for
cultivation. On the other hand, 53.900 hectare (89,89%) are
located in good and reasonable areas for the eucalyptus crops.
Therefore, it is possible to deduce that the Eucalyptus is not
                         causing significant environmental impacts.",
